It is 2017 and our Coffee Hound Featured Artist program has returned, beginning with the work of local artist, Alexandria Harris, who describes her style as “a mess of beautiful accidents created from experiments.”

Educated at Illinois State University, and having developed a process of exploration and self-discovery, Harris works with a variety of three dimensional media, including wood, metal, clay, and found objects, but also enjoys working with ink and “occasionally painting with acrylic and oils.”

Concerning her process, Harris says, “Along the way, I usually find something really interesting that a tool can do, or a certain technique that I want to dive into. From there, my work really creates itself.” With regard to the pieces currently on display at the Hound, she explains, “This work specifically was inspired by a figure drawing class and the idea of fragmenting a drawing, or to put it boldly, fragmenting a person. The medium, ink wash, was the experimental part which inspired how I executed my subject matter.” Upon viewing her work, Harris “hope[s] everyone takes away something different.”

In the past, Harris’ work has been on display at galleries such as Transpace and University Galleries.

At present, Harris is working on a larger painting, adding, “I’m not sure what it will turn out to be yet, but I’m excited to find out.”

If you would like to see Alexandria Harris’ work, please stop by the Coffee Hound’s café in UpTown Normal from now to the end of February.
